Catastrophic & Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Each year in the United States almost 100,000 people suffer traumatic brain injuries that require medical treatment and affect their ability to perform everyday activities. There are two general types of head injuries: open and closed. An open injury means the skull has been fractured and is typically the result of a fall. A closed head injury does not involve a fracture, but can be more serious than an open injury due to the possibility of brain swelling and the formation of blood clots inside the skull. Whether a brain injury is open or closed, it can cause paralysis or death. Brain injuries may be difficult to diagnose and if a loved one has suffered from any type of trauma to the head, they should be closely monitored for the following signs:
- Severe headaches
- Confusion
- Unusual tiredness
- Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
- Nausea and dizziness
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result from various types of accidents or traumas.
Common causes of TBI include the following:
- Auto Accident
- Slip and Fall
- Work Related Injury
- Defective Products
- Defective Drugs
- Sports Injuries
- Any trauma to the head or neck region can cause the brain to bruise, bleed, tear or swell
A successful outcome in TBI cases requires an understanding of all of the various issues, including medical factors that may arise when an accident occurs.
